Passenger air travel accounts for approximately 2% of all fossil fuel-related emissions worldwide. While this is a small part of the overall GHG-emission picture, we recognize the need to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions from aviation as well as to support innovation for future carbon reduction.
The Canadian commercial aviation industry works with multiple organizations to address the reduction of emissions from air travel. The Canadian government oversees the impact of air travel on the environment through the Environment division of Transport Canada. Like many other nations, Canada supports the work of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which takes the lead in setting standards for aviation emissions. We believe that this global, sectoral approach is the best way to ensure the world's many airlines are working together to address the challenge of reducing emissions both internationally and domestically.
The international industry perspective can be found on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) website . For detailed information about commercial aviation and the environment, we recommend the website developed by the international organization, the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), based in Geneva, Switzerland.

The member airlines of NACC support the
voluntary Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) signed on June 19, 2005 between the previous
Canadian industry association to which the members belonged and
Transport Canada, and are actively engaged in discussions with
Transport Canada toward the creation of a revised framework.
As part of the ongoing effort to address CO2 emissions from commercial aviation, the NACC member airlines have agreed that a number of guiding principles are very important for the inclusion of all aviation CO2 emissions in a broader international framework. The NACC is advocating the adoption of these principles in the creation of CO2 emissions frameworks both in Canada, and internationally.
The NACC's members are committed to improving fuel efficiency in order to reduce the emissions of GHG from flights in Canada and abroad. The NACC's members have made fuel efficiency improvements through investment in fleet renewal programs and the institution of policies and procedures that impact their operations, improving efficiency and reducing fuel burn.
