Reducing Our Footprint

improving aviation efficiency and reducing emissions

NACC has released its report entitled Improving Aviation Efficiency and Reducing Emissions:  A NACC Framework, as part of our continued efforts to improve aviation efficiency and its environmental impact.

Our Commitment to the Environment

The member airlines of the NACC are committed to actively working to reduce the impacts of air travel on the environment. Each airline works in multiple areas, including fuel efficiency improvement, emissions reduction, noise abatement, waste reduction, and best practices for the use of glycol for de-icing.

The NACC's members invite you to review our environmental commitments, posted on our websites:

Air Canada    Jazz Aviation LP    Transat    WestJet

Climate Change and Aviation

The NACC's members recognize the need to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions from aviation as well as to support innovation for future carbon reduction from air travel. We support a global, sectoral approach to aviation emissions, as is currently in place under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Recycling (Onboard and Airports)

The impact on the environment of waste generated onboard aircraft is of concern to the NACC's members, and the subject of both individual member airline effort and group discussions at the NACC Environment Subcommittee Recycling Working Group.

Glycol Mitigation

Propylene glycol is a chemical compound commonly used to de-ice aircraft and protect against dangerous aircraft icing when flying in winter conditions. To ensure that glycol is being contained at deicing stations, glycol mitigation programs have been in place in Canadian airports, through the Airline Consultative Committees (ACC), since 1993.

Noise Abatement

Transportation Canada's Civil Aviation branch governs aircraft noise which is generally of most concern for those who live closest to airports. In addition to complying with Transport Canada guidelines and regulations, the NACC's member airlines also work with individual airport authorities, citizen airport noise groups, and local councils to reduce the impacts of aircraft noise during take-off and landing.

Delivering Environmentally Responsible Air Travel

Canada's airlines work to continually reduce their environmental impact and aggressively curtail industry emissions.

Action: The NACC wants to demonstrate to Canadians that Canada's airlines are committed to finding cost-effective solutions to better environmental performance.

Canada's airlines are working towards:

  • Developing a principled industry position on environmental issues;
  • Informing governments and the public on significant environmental improvements made by Canada's airlines;
  • Demonstrating the airline industry's commitment to the environment.
